Promenade Blog February 2012

The Promenade is five years old!  It has grown each year.
2008 - peak number of booths was 22
2009 - peak number of booths was 43
2010 - peak number of booths was 77
2011 - peak number of booths was 104

One visitor said that coming to the Promenade was like visiting a fantasy land where you can leave your cares behind and enter a magical place that has unusual gifts, interesting foods, and some of your favorite music played by local musicians.

Speaking of which - we are starting now to book entertainers, amateur or professional - each week we have had a variety of vocalists, bands, magicians, and/or dance groups perform to the delight of our visitors!  Call, text, or email Heidi Potter at: HeidiBoydPotter@gmail.com, 801-822-6434 or 801-898-6222 to get on the schedule.  The Promenade supplies a stage (16 X 12 feet), three wireless mics, 500 watt amp, and loudspeakers.

One of the original goals of the Promenade was to encourage businesses to occupy some of the available shop spaces on Main Street.  That goal is gaining traction: a dozen new businesses have joined Main Street and most of the vacancies on the east side of the street are now occupied (please visit our new stores).  The west side of Main still has many open spaces. Promenade Blog July 9, 2010

This is week two of the Pleasant Grove Promenade. Last year in week two we had 32 booths. Last night there were 50.

Mayor Bruce Call and I were visiting last night and the idea came to us that the Promenade is all about PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT.

Personal Development 1

Entrepreneurs of all ages are setting up Promenade booths to sell unique products they have developed or have found sources for. The Promenade is fostering entrepreneurship, product development, marketing, budgeting.

Personal Development 2

Entertainers of all ages and skill levels are taking advantage of the Promenade’s open stage time to overcome shyness by singing, playing instruments, dancing, doing magic, or a stand-up routine in front of an impartial audience. It is encouraging personal development by bringing out talents (the Promenade provides the stage and sound system including 4 mics).

Personal Development 3

Networking is rampant at the Promenade. People are developing business alliances, doing business with local providers, and making contacts which will enhance their future business goals. That is great Personal Development.

So, come join in. There are still lots of booth spaces available (contact Steven.Downs@hotmail.com). There are still lots of times on the open stage.

Just one more comment – last night we learned from a vendor that sells Nacho Libre Corn that she has never tried this before. She started doing this to raise money to buy her kids swimming passes. She sold out 45-minutes before the 9:00 p.m. closing time. Congratulations

Stories from the Pleasant Grove Promenade  August 6, 2009
By Richard M. Bradford

Forty-two vendors attended this week. Up from thirty-eight last week.

Kris’ Jewelry at the Promenade tells this story. Two weeks ago her daughter’s soccer team decided they needed to raise money. Kris said she would donate 40% of her sales that day at the Promenade to the team. To promote sales she asked the parents of each team member to bring all their friends and neighbors… telling of the 40% donation deal. In one four hour stretch Kris’ Jewelry sold $1,000 of merchandise and raised $400 for the team!

Construction Monsters, a home remodeling company headed by Michael Douglas (no relation to Catherine Zeta Jones) sold a $23,000 home remodeling job yesterday to a couple who had shopped his booth for four consecutive weeks and finally bought yesterday!

During Amateur Entertainment which runs each  Thursday from 4-6 p.m. two weeks ago a dance team of youngsters decided to show up in character. They performed several of their team dances much to the delight of family members and Farmer’s Market patrons and vendors.

That same day, during Professional Entertainer hour which also runs weekly, but from 6-8 p.m., a scheduled vocalist entertained everyone by singing practically the entire soundtrack of Les Miserables with a robust baritone voice which filled the Park. That same night a husband and wife team brought Karaoke CD’s and entertained all with a variety of duets from Disney and Broadway.

A family came with cousins and siblings and took four booths. They sold their various talents in sewing, artwork, and baking. Said one, “it’s like a family reunion that made us some money.”

Overheard a conversation in French between a customer and the proprietor of the La Creperie.

A young lad stared intently at a beautifully decorated cupcake. He told a passerby that he had spent his money at the face painter’s. The passerby gave him two bucks to make the purchase. A few minutes later the boy’s older brother showed up and offered to trade the passerby his cookie for $2 so he too could get a cupcake.

Background – The Pleasant Grove Farmer’s Market is held every Thursday throughout July through September between the hours of 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. Booths are $10 per week. Farmers pay $5. Registration is simple. No contract or time commitment is required, although, in some cases a sales tax and or County Health Department permit may be required. Find out all you need to know on the Promenade’s website at www.pgprom.com. The Promenade Committee is especially interested in attracting farmers and amateur musicians.
